Hello! I’m Alyssa Jo Varner, a graphic designer & writer. I grew up in the Midwest and studied English Literature & Writing at the University of Iowa before moving to Brooklyn where I studied Graphic & Web Design at Baruch College. After a decade in New York City, I returned to Iowa City to work as Creative Coordinator at the University of Iowa Library’s Digital Scholarship & Publishing Studio.
My comic books have been exhibited at festivals around New York City including Brooklyn Book Festival, MoCCA Fest, Comic Arts Brooklyn (CAB), the New York Public Library Comic Con, and Pete’s Mini Zine Fest. I was the recipient of an artist residency at SPACE on Ryder Farm in September of 2016. My illustrated essay, “Foraging,” was published in Hobart literary magazine’s Sunday Comics section in 2017. I was hired to write a comic book in the Tales of the Night Watchman universe titled Sanctuary, published in Spring 2019 by So What? Press with art by Victoria Lau, colors by Vicky Leta, cover art by Robin Ha. And I write, draw, and self-publish the comic book series Blown Away.
I live in Iowa City (with a rescue pup named Huey) where I enjoy hiking, biking, and waiting for winter to end.
